The Department was organized on the basis of “Seismology” and “Gravimetry” Departments. There are conducted researches in the fields of geodynamics, gravimetry and seismology.

Scientific directions:
 
  • geodynamic monitoring of hydrocarbon deposits and modeling the processes of gravitational instability;
  • time-space regularities of Earth gravitational field distribution, their nature and interpretation: Earth structure study, research of tidal variations of Earth gravitation field;
  • shallow geophysics; landslide, karst processes, buildings and constructions basements study, research on the construction areas and microseismic zoning;
  • seismic hazard, microseismic zoning and seismic risk assessment;
  • defining the order of seismic events occurrence, statistical and mathematical analysis, clusterization and revealing the pattern of their occurrence.

The research into the field of modern geodynamics of Azerbaijan was started together with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) in 1998. For these scientific researches the newest modern method of space geodesy – GPS was embedded, which uses the capacities of Informative Communication Technology (ICT).

Currently, in Azerbaijan there established a geodynamic network which includes 46 GPS stations. They are used for monitoring the changes of horizontal movement rates of the Earth’s surface.

The main fundamental results:
 
  • Researched the influence of Arabian plate on the geodynamic and seismic situation of the Azerbaijan territory on the basis of the monitoring the horizontal movement by the method of space geodesy GPS (1998-2014 years).
  • Revealed the distribution of horizontal movements rates of the Earth’s surface of the Azerbaijan territory, estimated their values, and also assessed the patterns of the rate deformations.

For the first time, a new geodynamic model of Azerbaijan part of Caucasus was developed based on the conception of plate
 
  • tectonics, which reflects rotational movement (counterclockwise) of Caucasus plate and defines south-north-easternward of the general compression of the region;
  • On the basis of GPS, seismic and gravimetric data, the tectonic state of Central-Caspian Seismic Zone was confirmed where a number of main oil-gas resources of Azerbaijan were concentrated.

The researches in seismology

In Azerbaijan, the considerable contribution in the development of seismology was conducted by N.V. Malinovskiy, E.I. Byus, Sh. S. Ragimov, F. T. Kuliyev, R. A. Agamirzoyev, V. P. Kuznetsov, Z. Z. Sultanova, E. B. Agalarova, A. G. Gasanov, I. G. Kerimov, O. B. Babazadeh, E. M. Kuliyeva, B. M. Panahi, A. T. Ismail-zadeh, R. I. Gasanov, S. T. Agayeva, G. R. Babayev.

The main results:
 
  • The map of maximum horizontal stress state of the Azerbaijan territory was plotted by the CASMO method.
  • Dynamics of the sequence of seismic events of Absheron-Pribalkhan Sill was researched, non-Poisson pattern of earthquake distribution in this zone was defined.
  • Mathematical models were plotted which combine all factors into one consolidated value of seismic risk for near-, far- and local-field scenario earthquakes;
  • The stress state of mud volcanoes of Shamakhi-Gobustan zone after strong earthquake of 25th of November 2000 occurred in Caspian sea was assessed and estimated;
  • The maps of microseismic zoning, soil amplification and resonance frequency distributions for Baku city were compiled.

The researches in gravimetry

One of founders of this scientific direction in Azerbaijan was professor, doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences R. M. Gadjiyev. The main researches were conducted into the framework of international projects “Upper Mantle” and “Geodynamic project”.

In department:
 
  • Methods of numerical analysis of gravim-etrical data with the application of Hartley transformation and gravitational modeling of deep structure were developed.
  • Structural peculiarities of lithosphere were researched, the nature of gravitational anomalies was analyzed; the depth of perturbing masses was defined with the use of spectrum thickness. Boundary analysis of geo-structural elements was done.

Achievements of the Departments can be considered the followings:
 
  • Determining regularities of time-space anomalies of the distribution of gravitational field.
  • Revealing zone of decompaction mud volcano chamber.
  • 2D and 3D gravitational models of deep structure of Azerbaijan were plotted.
  • Regularities of non-tidal variations of gravity force were studied.
  • Generation possibility of Kelvin–Helmholtz inner waves in the layers of Upper Mantle was revealed.
  • Gravitational instability processes were researched in the sedimentary layers of the oil-gas bearing regions of Azerbaijan.
  • Possibility of convectional movements of sedimentary layers of oil-gas bearing regions was proved and convectional model of hydrocarbon migration was suggested.
As a summary of the complex researches, conception of compensation of gravitational anomaly of SCB was proposed formulated as a result of fast subsidence of continental plate at the expense of activity of hard rocks layers under Moho.

In the department, there conducted researches of tidal variations of gravitational field of various tectonic zones. The analysis of gravitational field data of Sheki station situated in the collision zone allowed revealing daily, half-daily tidal and anomalies interrelated with the seismic processes. There conducted regional and micro-gravimetric measurements for solving geological and engineering tasks.

Teaching activity

The department carries out supervision of the base chair “Seismology and Earth Physics” of Baku State University, established in the Institute of Geology and Geo-physics of ANAS.

In the department there are two international laboratories:
  • “Earthquake space-time analysis and hazard laboratory” (ESTAHL) with Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis at National Research Council (Italy).
  • “Modern movements of Earth’s crust and geodynamic hazard” with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA).
  • “Azerbaijan National Data Center” of global monitoring network “International Data Center of Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO)”.

Innovative and applied activity

Engineering-geophysical researches: monitoring of local geodynamic and landslide processes of karst zones, the state of buildings and constructions basements, microseismic zoning.

International relations

The Department coordinates its activity with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (Germany), Université Pierre et Marie CURIE (France) and Institute of Earth Physics at Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow State University, Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis at National Research Council (CNR) (Italy), University Milan-Bicocca (Italy).

Since 2011, the Department actively cooperates with International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) as National Committee at IUGG (General-Secretary of the National Committee, candidate of geological-mineralogical sciences, associate professor, Babayev G.R., National Representative of International Association of Ge-odesy at IUGG, academician of ANAS, Kadirov F.A.).

Grants:

The larger portion of researches the Department conducted in the framework of grant support of Science Development Foundation of the President of Azerbaijan Republic, and also SOCAR, CRDF, CNR, NSF, INTAS, STCU.

According to the order of the President of Azerbaijan Republic Safarov Rafig Tofig ogly was awarded to Presidential award for youth in 01.02.2014.
