INSTITUTE OF GEOLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS RESEARCHERS PARTICIPATED IN THE INTERNATIONAL EVENT HELD IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

The next meeting of the European Geoscience Union General Assembly (EGU – 2025) was held in Vienna, Austria, from April 27 to May 02, 2025. The researchers of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics - a leading researcher of the Modern Geodynamics and Space Geodesy department, Ph.D., Assoc. prof. Rafig Safarov and a leading researcher of the Basin Modeling and Geotechnologies department, Ph.D. Tofig Rashidov have participated in the event.

Rafig Safarov made a presentation on the topic “Crustal deformation of the Azerbaijan territory: results from 25 years (1998-2022) of monitoring using GPS” prepared within the framework of international cooperation with his co-authors representing the Seismological Service Center of ANAS and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. The research work was dedicated to discussing the results obtained from observations of crustal deformations conducted in Azerbaijan using the GPS method of space geodesy for 25 years starting from 1998.

Tofig Rashidov made a presentation on the topic “Natural hazards from mud volcanoes: importance of understanding and acceptance by example of Azerbaijan”. The research work addressed the issue of drawing attention to the natural hazards that may arise for human life and activities, on the example of including the volcanoes of Lusi (Indonesia) and Vandan (Taiwan), as well as the Lokbatan, Shikhzahirli, Kecheldag and Keyraki mud volcanoes, and their serious consequences. The importance of taking appropriate measures to prevent human casualties and damage to infrastructure due to mud volcano eruptions was noted.

The presented research works aroused great interest, and proposals for future cooperation were discussed with scientists and experts from different countries.

It should be noted that this year, scientists and researchers from more than 120 countries registered to participate in the European Geoscience Union General Assembly, and a total of 20,984 participants, both on-site and virtual, participated.
