IGG SCIENTISTS INVESTIGATED THE RISK OF THE OTMANBOZDAG MUD VOLCANO

March 12, 2020

The specialists of the Department of mud volcanism of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics investigated the risk of the Otmanbozdag mud volcano, one of the world’s largest and most active mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan, located in the Garadagh region.

The study was carried out according to agreement between Norm LLC and IGG. In 2017 and 2018, two-phase eruptions were recorded that posed the risks for the gas distribution station owned by Norm LLC.

The surveying and the structural analysis of the mud volcano area were carried out. The survey by drone and the aerospace material were analyzed.
According to the agreement, from September 15 to November 15, the tension state of the Otmanbozdag mud volcano location was estimated, the direction of tectonic dislocations was determined, the mud flow rate was calculated and the regularity for the potential flows directions of breccias - ejecta from the eastern and western eruptive centers were revealed based on the conducted works.

Due to comprehensive studies, the potential risk was assessed and it was recommended to change the gas distribution station location.
The reports were made in two languages - Azerbaijani and English.
