Regionally spread lower Pliocene productive series (PS) is the main oil and gas series in Azerbaijan. More than 95 % of the oil produced in Azerbaijan fall to this deposits and this is a nice evidence of the existence of favorable reservoirs there. Different research workers conducted numerous lithologic-mineralogical studies of the core material from the wells drilled in the PS. Geology Institute jointly with the west oil companies have prepared and studied a number of high-quality thin sections and lithologic- petrographic peculiarities of certain types of sedimentary rocks. They have also conducted numerous studies in roentgenodifractometer and electric microscope (determination of the clayey minerals). This allows considerably clarifying our knowledge about PS reservoir quality and about the character of their change in space.
To summarize the gathered data the "Atlas Of The Productive Series Reservoirs Of Azerbaijan" was prepared for publication. Atlas consists of two parts. The first part presents general information. It includes a scheme of location of the studied oil and gas regions, oil and gas and productive areas and also a structural map of the PS, geologic profiles and sections of oil wells etc. The second part according to a standard scheme demonstrates mainly color photos of the thin sections with lithologic- petrographic descriptions, petrophysical data (porosity, permeability, carbonate content). It also presents roentgenodifractometric and electronic- microscope analyses of the clayey minerals.
Our studies involve 3 oil and gas regions in Azerbaijan: the Absheron region, the Pri-Kura region, the Baku archipelago and the west Turkmenian. 150 samples from 38 areas were studied in these regions.
In the Absheron region 53 samples were studied: Absheron, Arzu, Azeri, Azi-Aslanova, Bakhar, Chirag, Garbi Apsheron, Guneshli, Janub 2, Kapaz, Oguz.
In the Pri-Kura region 31 samples were studied: Babazanan, Dashgil, Galmas, Garabagly, Kalamaddin, Kyurovdag, Kyursangya, Mishovdag, Nefchala, Pirsagat.
In the Baku archipelago 28 samples were studied: Alyat-deniz, Bulla-deniz, Duvanny, Duvanny-deniz, Garasu, Khere-zirya, March 8, Sangachal deniz, Sangi Mugan, Seyar, Umid.
In the west Turkmenia 21 samples were studied: Barinov, Erdecli-west, Fersman, Lam, Livanov-east, Zhdanov.
SEM (scanning electron microscope) image analysis is 17.
