The Republican scientific seminar in the field of Earth sciences was held in the ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG). The seminar was opened by the IGG General Director, academician Akif Alizadeh.

Then the head of the department of oil and gas geophysics of the ANAS Institute of Oil and Gas, Doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences Namaz Yusubov. N. Yusubov made a report on “About the shallow-focus earthquakes in the Middle and Lower Kura depressions”.

The scientist noted that 70% of earthquakes in the study area (Azerbaijan) were recorded on tectonic faults in the junction zones of the Kura depression with the ridges of the Lesser and Greater Caucasus. However, about 30% of earthquakes are observed in depression zones without tectonic faults. According to data interpretation obtained by seismic monitoring and reflection seismic survey, it was established that about half of the shallow-focus earthquakes in the Kura depression were caused by the heterogeneous structure of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic series in the geologic cross-section, sometimes in their contact zones, as well as in the sedimentary layer. This conclusion was confirmed by the analysis of long-term geodetic survey data and the fact that the shallow-focus earthquakes are located in the depths of subhorizontal destruction zones in the geologic cross-section. The results of data interpretation and analysis allow defining the seismic maps of the study area.
There was a discussion at the end of the report. N. Yusubov answered numerous questions. The seminar participants highly appreciated the report.
