ACADEMICIAN ARIF HASHIMOV: “RESEARCH BY SCIENTISTS OF THE DIVISION OF EARTH SCIENCES PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE REPUBLIC"

On March 10, the Acting President of ANAS, academician Arif Hashimov held the meeting with the general directors, executive directors and scientific secretaries of scientific institutions of the ANAS Division of Earth sciences (DES) at the ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics.

The General director of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, academician Akif Alizadeh opened the meeting and said that the main goal of this meeting was to discuss about the current state of institutions of the Division of Earth sciences, about the existing problems, research and long-term plans.

Academician Akif Alizadeh highly appreciated that academician Arif Hashimov held the meetings with scientists from the different ANAS institutions.

The academician noted that the scientists of the Division of Earth Sciences always took an active part in all scientific activities to develop the Azerbaijani science.
Academician Arif Hashimov said that the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan was established in 1945 and one of the main goals was to study the natural resources of our country. According to academician Arif Gashimov, the research in the field of geology and geophysics, the oil and gas fields development, seismology and geography, alternative energy, natural resources, environmental protection, problems of the Caspian Sea, ecology, etc., which are basic to the scientific activities of the Division of Earth sciences, play an important role in the development of Azerbaijani science and the republic as a whole. Academician Arif Hashimov added that the employyees of the DES have great scientific potential.

The Acting President of ANAS noted that at the General meeting of ANAS in 2011, academician Akif Alizadeh proposed 4 important suggestions related to comprehensive research carried out in the Division of Earth sciences.

In conclusion, the academician stressed that it is necessary to remain the intellectual assets, to support scientific schools and ensure the sustainable continuity of science.

Then the floor was given to Vice-President of ANAS, chairman of the Scientific Council of the Division, academician Ibrahim Guliyev. The academician noted that the Division has a strong scientific potential and in recent years, young employees have been sent to practice at international academic centers through grant projects to protect this potential.

Academician Ibrahim Guliyev noted that the climate changes today reveal a number of geological problems and said that scientists working in the field of Earth Sciences are responsible for conducting research on these problems and solving them.

Touching upon the existing problems in the Division of Earth Sciences, academician Ibrahim Guliyev said that it became necessary of the appropriate equipment to carrying out the relevant studies in the field of water resources, climatology and etc., and to organize special laboratories. He also presented the proposals on expanding relations between ANAS and Azercosmos OJSC, financing expeditions and others.

During the meeting General director of the ANAS Institute of Oil and Gas, academician Fakhraddin Kadirov, General director of the Republican Seismi Survey Center, corresponding member of ANAS Gurban Yetirmishli, General director of the Institute of Geography, Doctor of geographical sciences Zakir Eminov and General director of the Museum of natural history, Ph.D. in biology Tariel Eybatov made also the speeches . The scientists spoke about the research carried out in their institutions in the field of the climate change impact on the environment, the air-launch carbon dioxide acquisition and its storage in the wells, the Caspian Sea level changes, geodynamic processes, the seismic stations installed and are planned to be installed at the expense of international grant projects, etc.

In conclusion, academician Arif Hashimov noted that such meetings will be held regularly and wished the employees of the Division success in research work.
