THE REPUBLICAN SEMINAR IN THE FIELD OF EARTH SCIENCES WAS HELD
May 27, 2021
The republican scientific seminar in the field of Earth sciences was held in the ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG). Director of the institute, academician Akif Alizadeh opened the meeting and said that the seminar was dedicated to the report of academician Parviz Mammadov on “Sedimentation models of the South Caspian basin”.
In his report P. Mammadov acquainted interesting scientific views on the tectonotype, deep structure, geodynamics and stages of the South Caspian megabasin development. The scientist presented information on current issues about the genesis of geological objects and structures in seismic sections, about the classification of non-anticlinal structures. The scientist noted that, two conceptual bodies are separated in the South Caspian megabasin and their boundaries intercrossed within a certain period of time. This fails to the basic requirements of stratigraphy.
Academician P. Mammadov noted that seismic stratigraphy provides a large amount of information about the deep structure and evolution of the South Caspian megabasin. From the point of view of the tectonic paradigm of lithospheric plates, the South Caspian megabasin consists of sequence of basins of different types, which alternate in space and time within the geotectonic cycle. The seismic stratigraphy morphologically divides basins into two types: deep-water and shallow-water epicontinental basins.
The scientist also analyzed sedimentation processes in basins of different types.
At the end of the presentation, the scientist answered numerous questions. The participants of the seminar highly appreciated the presented report.
