THE NEXT SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL WAS HELD

February 28, 2020

The next meeting of the Scientific Council was held in the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS.

The Director of IGG, academician Akif Alizadeh opened the meeting and delivered introduction. A. Alizadeh acquainted the participants with the meeting review. Then, the chief scientific researcher of the Department of modern geodynamics and space geodesy, ScD in Physics and Mathematics Oktay Babazadeh made a report.

The report of O. Babazadeh “Practical earthquakes prediction of in the Caucasus-Iranian region on the base of the new seismological strategy” is devoted to the refinement of seismic hazard assessment in the region. The techniques of geochemical and physical processes in earthquakes source zones are theoretically developed. Multi-year researches of seismodynamic processes preceded strong earthquakes allowed to predict the potential hypocentres in the Caucasus-Iranian region, as well as to determine the earthquakes probability. The extensive geological-geophysical and seismic-geodynamical data were collected to study source zones, earthquake precursors, to analyze the lithosphere plates, microplates, kinematic and dynamic crustal blocks movements. The obtained results were published in peer reviewed journal, collections and monographs.

After the report O. Babazadeh answered numerous questions of the participants.

Then, the discussion of the research programs implementation was held at the Scientific Council meeting.

After the discussion, the following research programs were adopted: “Alkali and subalkaline magmatism of the Caucasian segment of the Mediterranean fold belt” (2020-2024) (academician A.J. Ismail-Zadeh, ScD in Geology and Mineralogy, Professor M.N. Mammadov), “Mineralogical peculiarities and petrology of alkali and subalkaline magmatic complexes of the Caucasian segment of the Mediterranean fold belt” (2020–2022) (academician A.J. Ismail-Zadeh, ScD in Geology and Mineralogy, Professor M.N. Mammadov), “Data bank of petrochemistry of the Azerbaijan igneous complex” (2023–2024) (academician A.J. Ismail-zade, ScD in Geology and Mineralogy, Professor M.N. Mammadov),“Paleontological Atlas of Azerbaijan” (2020–2022) (academician Ak.A. Alizadeh, corresponding member of ANAS E.H.-M. Aliyeva, candidate of biological sciences T.M. Eybatov).

Then, ScD in Geology and Mineralogy Abdulvahab Mukhtarov and the PhD on Earth sciences Saadat Alekperova made a report on the research work implementation - the “Geothermal Atlas of Azerbaijan and the cadastre of geothermal energy resources", as well as on the results of IGG masters assessment. The masters thesis of BSU masters working in the Institute of Geology and Geophysics were approved.

At the end of the meeting, the different current issues were discussed.
