February 12, 2020

In accordance with the “Rules for the scientific seminar implementation at dissertation boards”, approved by the decree of the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission dated October 29, 2019, the first thesis defense of Leyla Shikhova took place in the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS.

The Deputy Director in science, corresponding member of ANAS Dadash Huseynov opened the meeting. D. Huseynov spoke about innovations in the scientific seminar implementation at dissertation boards. The scientist noted that according to the new rules, the meeting of scientific seminar shall be deemed duly constituted at the presence of five members. Two reviewers will be appointed during the PhD thesis discussion. The other participants other than scientific seminar members should leave the meeting. Then the scientific seminar members should hold closed-door concluding discussion of the thesis by secret ballot.

Then, the defender of thesis, the engineer of the AzLab LLC Exploration and Research center Leyla Shikhova made a report on “The prediction the oil-and-gas presence of the Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene deposits in the western part of the Absheron archipelago based on facies analysis and reservoir models”.

The results of study of the geologic-geophysical peculiarities of complex oil-gas fields on the example of the Absheron archipelago fields are given in the thesis. The information of the lithological composition and reservoir properties were obtained more accurate and the sedimentary paleoenvironment of Miocene deposits were determined on the base of analysis of geochemical, lithological and mineralogical and microfaunistic studies and of structural-textural properties of rocks. There are more than one hundred graphic tables in thesis.

The reviewers – ScD in Geology and Mineralogy Tofig Bagarov and PhD in Earth Sciences, associate professor Orkhan Abbasov made the points and reported on the thesis.

At the end L. Shikhova answered numerous questions of the seminar participants.

Based on secret ballot, the scientific seminar members decided to submit Leyla Shikhovas thesis “The prediction the oil-and-gas presence of the Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene deposits in the western part of the Absheron archipelago based on facies analysis and reservoir models” to defense in the Specialized Scientific Council.
