January 11, 2020
The Director of the ANAS Institute of Geography, academician Ramiz Mammadov and the head of the department of Landscape and Landscape Planning of IG, PhD in geography, associate professor Mirnukh Ismayilov created a map of ecological risks of Azerbaijan based on natural and technogenic hazards. This is a large-scale digital ecological risks map. First in Azerbaijan the map was compiled on the base of multi-parameter data.
The scientists have identified the environmental hazard all over the country, including mudflows, floods, landslides, demographic and technological impacts, surface and ground water pollution, Caspian Sea level disturbance, salinization, water-logging, climate-related risks, desertification and earthquakes.
The map analysis shows that 37.2% of the territory of the republic is the zone with very low ecological risk, 19.8% - weak, 23.9% - medium, 12.4% - high and 6.8% - very high.
The new map of ecological risks of Azerbaijan will be useful in the infrastructure projects implementation, construction, urban planning and insurance.
