IGG SCIENTISTS INVESTIGATED THE RISK OF THE OTMANBOZDAG MUD VOLCANO

January 27, 2020

The specialists of the Department of mud volcanism of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics investigated the risk of the Otmanbozdag mud volcano, one of the worlds largest and most active mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan, located in the Garadagh region.

The study was carried out according to agreement between Norm LLC and IGG. In 2017 and 2018, two-phase eruptions were recorded that posed the risks for the gas distribution station owned by Norm LLC.

During the study, the tension state of the Otmanbozdag mud volcano location was estimated, the directions of crustal movements and tectonic dislocations were determined.

Due to comprehensive studies, the potential risk was assessed and it was recommended to change the gas distribution station location.

The reports were made in two languages - Azerbaijani and English.
