The Geological-mineralogical museum was founded in 1993. The museum exposition is based on geological materials of the Azerbaijan territory. There are rocks and minerals from different regions of Azerbaijan, fauna and flora of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic, borehole data - cores.

During over than twenty years, the museum has significantly expanded its activities. The number of museum exhibits also increased due to field work in the Greater and Lesser Caucasus by the Institutes geologists, including academicians Sh.A. Azizbekov, M.A. Kashkay, A.A. Alizadeh, G.A. Alizadeh, M.M. Aliyev, Ak.A. Alizadeh.

The museum collection consists of more than 500 rocks and minerals and more than 250 fauna and flora exhibits.

In the museum hall construction materials, facing, semi-precious and rag stones are presented in a separate case.

There are about 1600 core samples in the museum selected from different Azerbaijan oil and gas regions (Absheron, Baku archipelago, Kura depression, Yevlakh, Agjabadi, etc.).

The Geological-mineralogical museum is rich in paleontological material. The exhibits of Devonian, Cretaceous, Paleogene, Neogene and Quaternary are represented here. There are Bivalvia, gastropods, sea urchins, belemnites, sea corals, ammonites and brachiopods, demostrated in the museum and in the hall cases of the Institute. The fauna in case is represented according to age from Devonian.

In the museum all data on the exhibits are collected in the computer data bank for widespread use. The data of the Geological-mineralogical museum is used not only by the scientists of the Institute, but also by young scientists and defenders of thesis. The sector takes part in expansion of relation between science and education, training of specialists. Young scientists, masters degree, students can acquaint theireself with the exhibits and study them using the data bank.

The new scientific publications and materials reflecting the creativity of leading scientists of the Institute are collected in museum.

The museum works hand in glove with other museums, organizes the interchange of excess exhibits ones and carries on systematization.

The first catalogue about the museum exhibits was published by the Nafta-Press publishing house under the supervision of Academician Ak. Alizadeh, responsible for the publication - IGG Deputy Director in science, corresponding member of ANAS D. Huseynov; photographers - Sh. Nazarli and T. Rashidov.
