AZERBAIJANI SCIENCE HAS A HEAVY LOSS

September 21, 2021

A senior researcher of the Department of modern geodynamics and space geodesy of the ANAS Institute of geology and geophysics, Doctor of physical-mathematical sciences Ogtay Babazadeh died at the age of 82.

Babazadeh Ogtay Baba oglu was born in 1939 in Baku. In 1963, he graduated from the geologic-exploration faculty of the Azerbaijan Oil and Chemistry Institute (now the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University) with a degree in mining engineer-geologist. He worked in the South Scientific Research Institute of Geophysics. Attended the post-graduate course at the Institute of physics of the Earth of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

In 1974 he defended his Ph.D. thesis on “The investigation of deep faults in the earth crust of Azerbaijan according to geophysical anomalies” and in 2010 - his doctoral thesis on “Static and kinematic foundations of seismic geodynamics of focal earthquake zones and space-time forecasting”.

The scientist has developed a method on the interpretation of the diffracted waves for identification and tracing of deep faults in the local zones, the correlation method of the prediction of the medium and long seismic hazard according to seismic-geophysical indexes of deep faults and the relief of seismic margins. He was engaged in the problem of earthquake prediction. Studied the phenomena of migration of the mud volcanic eruptions, preceding strong earthquakes. He constructed a new scheme of general seismic zonation for Azerbaijan, a block geodynamic model of seismokinematics and long-term prediction of strong earthquakes for the Caucasus-South Caspian-Iranian region. By the use of seismic methods, the scientist predicted the reservoir sections including vertical seismic sounding of reflected waves, evaluated the degree of fluid saturation based on the determination of the inversion velocity decompression zones and energy representations of the signals of reflected wave. He studied the problem of seismic geodynamics of earthquake focal zones on the base of a new direction – structural-focal seismology.

The talented scientist was the author of more than 180 scientific publications and 2 inventions. There are certificates of authorship, patents and monographs. Trained 5 candidates of sciences.

Ogtay Babazadeh will forever remain in the memory of colleagues.

Allah rehmet elasin!
