JOINT MEETING DEDICATED TO THE ANNIVERSARY OF ACADEMICIAN A. ALIZADEH WAS HELD
May 24, 2021
A joint meeting of the ANAS Division of Earth Sciences, the Scientific Council of the ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics, the Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists and the Azerbaijani Branch of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, dedicated to the 110th anniversary of academician Aliashraf Alizadeh was held.
The IGG Director, academician Akif Alizadeh opened the event and introduced the agenda to the participants. The scientist noted the importance of celebration of the 110th anniversary of the prominent scientist-geologist, teacher, doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences, professor, full member of ANAS, laureate of the USSR State Prize, Honoured Oil Worker of the USSR, Honoured Scientist and Engineer of the Turkmen SSR, academician Aliashraf Alizadeh.
Ak. Alizadeh said that A. Alizadeh was one of the founders of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. Over the past 74 years, the talented scientist achieved outstanding performance in his scientific and public activities.
In 1944 A. Alizadeh took the degree of Doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences for the monumental research “Maikop suite of Azerbaijan and its oil-bearing capacity”. The scientist carried out the geological researches in the main oil regions of the Azerbaijan SSR and developed a number of important oil and gas condensates (Siyazan, Zeyli-Zeyva, Buzovna-Mashtagi, Shabandag, Gyurgan, Garadag, Garabagly, Sangachal, Duvanny, Gazanbulag, Kyursangi, Muradkhanly). He was the discoverer of many oil fields in Azerbaijan. The scientist is known for his researches such as “Earth and earthquakes”, “Absheron of Azerbaijan”, “Akchagyl of Turkmenistan”, “The Sarmatians of Azerbaijan”, “Paleogene deposits of Azerbaijan”, etc. The scientist was twice awarded the title of laureate of the USSR State Prize: for the discovery and development of new oil fields (1943) and for the creation of a small-sized electric drill with the unique design for the oil industry (1946).
The IGG director underlined that academician Aliashraf Alizadeh was a scientist with a broad outlook and unique talent. A. Alizade’s scientific school played an important role in the development of Turkmenistan petroleum geology.
Then, Doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences Shahvaled Kocharli made a report on “Development of oil geology in Azerbaijan and the scientific heritage of academician Aliashraf Alizadeh”. The reporter said about the scientific activities of the scientist. In 1946-1948 A.Alizadeh worked as the head of the Azneft and Aznefterazvedka Associations, in 1949-1950 - employee of the Turkmen branch of the Azerbaijan State Research and Design Institute of the Oil Industry. Under his leadership, the theoretical and practical problems of regional geology and oil geology were solved. He was the head of the department of the Turkmen State University named after M.Gorky and was the Head of the department of mineral resources of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR. Since 1970, A.Alizadeh has been the Director of the Azerbaijan State Research and Design Institute of the Oil Industry. He was the Head of the department of regional geology and tectonics of the Gubkin Institute of Geology (now the ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics) of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. A. Alizadeh was an honorary member of the All-Union Society of Paleontologists, laureate of the Gubkin Prize, deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, twice awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and medals.
Then the IGG Scientific Council continued the work according to agenda. There were discussed the compilation of the “Paleontological Atlas of Azerbaijan” (academician Ak.A. Alizadeh, Ph.D. in biology T.M.Eybatov, Ph.D. in Earth sciences Sh.Sh.Bayramova).
The information about researches carried out by the IGG scientists together with the scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences (academician Fakhraddin Kadirov), about joint research works carried out within the framework of the program of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) (academician F.Kadirov, corresponding member of ANAS Gurban Etirmishli (RCSS), ScD in Earth sciences, Associate Professor Gulam Babayev), about the installation of the gravimetric station in Turkan (Absheron) and about the participation in the international gravimetric studies (PhD Rafiq Safarov, Ph.D. Samir Mammadov) were discussed.
After the break, the XXI Republican Scientific Conference on “Education, migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons”, dedicated to the memory of academician A. Alizadeh, was held. The Conference was jointly organized by the ANAS Division of Earth sciences, the IGG Scientific Council, the Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists and the Azerbaijani Branch of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers.
