THE OUTSTANDING GEOLOGIST-SCIENTIST PASSED AWAY


The Head of the Department of history of the geological-geophysical sciences of the ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics, ScD in Geology and Mineralogy, Professor Hikmet Makhmudov, awarded the Presidential personal pension, died aged 84.

Since 1966 the scientist worked in the IGG.

The main research directions of the department headed by H. Makhmudov were determination of the development stages of research trends in the field of petrology and metallogeny of Azerbaijan; research of the geological sciences history in its different fields, analysis of the conducted research works and their step-by-step systematization; reveal of the geochemical peculiarities and fields of the non-metallic mineral resources use in Azerbaijan; history of geology development of Azerbaijan, tectonics, mineral resources, petrology and metallogeny.

It was obtained and classified more than 2000 main research works in the field of petrology and metallogeny conducted in period of 1930-1970 in Azerbaijan. Research works analysis according to petrology and metallogeny was made and their priority research fields were determined.

It was investigated the geochemical peculiarities of perlite fields of Azerbaijan, the nature of the meteoric and juvenile water in them. It was used perlites in agriculture, chemical industry, environment, food industry, construction and in other fields.

The gold, silver, piezoquartz and perlite deposits were discovered by the scientist.

H. Makhmudov was the author of about 200 scientific papers, 11 monographs, 8 textbooks.

H. Makhmudov successfully combined his scientific activities with pedagogical activity in higher schools. He trained of about 150 graduate theses.

The famous scientist was also a poet. Hikmet Makhmudov published a number of collections of his poems. He was a member of the Azerbaijan Writers Union, the author of 11 poems and 9 books of poetry.

The bright memory of the outstanding scientist-geologist, poet Hikmet Makhmudov will always live in our hearts.
