WHAT  IS  GEOLOGY  INSTITUTE  OF  AZERBAIJAN ?

Geology Institute was founded in 1938 on the basis of the Sector of Geology of the Azerbaijan branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Development of the Institute was closely linked with the progress of geological science in Azerbaijan. History of Geology Institute is inseparable from biographies of scientists who contributed much to the study of Geology in Azerbaijan and also to the widening of its base of mineral-and-raw materials resources and development of new fundamental trends in geology. At the initial stages of their activity research workers from the Institute conducted regional studies of geological structure of Azerbaijan and mapped vast territories. They also determined and studied a number of important fields of economic minerals. Gifted scholars-geologists were mainly graduaters from the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (Azerbaijan Oil Academy) and the Azerbaijan State University (Baku State University). Under the supervision of such outstanding scientists like Abramovich M.V., Vinogradov A.P., Golubyatnikov D.V., Gubkin I.M., Levinson-Lessing F.Y., Mirchink M.F., Muratov M.B., Nalivkin D.V., Peive A.V., Smirnov V.I., Sokolov B.S., Khain V.I. et al. they promoted foundation of Geology Institute - one of the leading scientific geological organizations in the former Soviet Union.

Reviewing the decades covered by the Institute we pay tribute to the memory of research workers whose gift and utter labour promoted a great progress of modern geological science in Azerbaijan. They are outstanding scientists-academicians: Azizbekov Sh.A., Aliev M.M., Ali-Zadeh A.A., Ali-Zadeh K.A., Ahmedov G.A., Kashkai M.A., Mamedov Sh.N., Mekhtiyev Sh.F., Salayev S.G., Sultanov A.D., Shikhalibeili E.Sh.; corresponding members Yakubov A.A., Aliyev A.G., Sultanov K.M., Efendiyev G.H.. Geophysical science in Azerbaijan was advanced by doctors of geological-mineralogical sciences Gajiev R.M., doctor of physical-mathematical sciences Ismail-zadeh T.A.; candidates of physical-mathematical sciences Kuznetsov V.P., Ragimov Sh.S. et al. Their studies laid priorities of fundamental and applied scientific research in the field of Geology and Geophysics and they also organized national scientific geological schools.

By the middle of the XX century they had laid the foundations of geological study of the territory of Azerbaijan. They were the first to compile geological, tectonical, neotectonical, seismotectonical, ets. maps of Azerbaijan of different scales. Their services to science were highly appreciated: they were awarded high scientific ranks and rewards. It is no doubt that the role of remarkable individuals in the development of science is great. But it should be mentioned that ordinary "workers of science" and their everyday work played a great role in the development of geological science in Azerbaijan too. The relay-race of scientific achievements made it possible to put the Institute in the worthy place among the scientific geological organizations.
